Casco Bay Spartans Wins 2008 AAA CCM MLK Tournament!

The 2008 Casco Bay Spartans went 6-0 en route to winning the 2008 AAA CCM MLK Invite in Rhode Island over MLK Weekend.

"We were missing one of our best forwards, Deagan Nadeau, and a versatile forward/defenseman, Cale Hanson, so we only had 11 guys who played 6 games in just three days. I was really proud of the way we competed -- especially considering the kids were all exhausted. It was a total team effort and it was fun to bring home the trophy," said Spartans Head Coach, Chuck Graceffa.

Casco Bay rode the stellar goaltending of tournament MVP, Adeline Roper, who, once again, justified her reputation as one of the very best goalies in New England.

In the first game of the tournament, Casco Bay came back from a two-goal deficit to beat the Boston Jr. Eagles 5-3 of the Fed Platinum League. Harry Seely scored the game winning goal with a nifty tip of Aizyk Laliberte's point shot. Laliberte and Caiden Kelley each scored twice for the Spartans while Connor Morrissette, Blake Christie, and Jacoby Oliveira each pitched in with two assists.

In their second game, Casco Bay beat the New England Bulldogs 4-0. Both teams had great goaltending performances as Roper got a shutout for Casco Bay and the Bulldogs goalie kept the game from getting out of hand. Blake Christie had two goals and Oliveira, once again, had two assists. Morrissette and Kelley rounded out the scoring.

In their third game, Casco Bay got off to a strong start with goals by Carnes and Oliveira to take a two goal lead against Honeybaked (Gold) out of Detroit. Honeybaked then scored three unanswered goals and was leading 3-2 until the end of the third, when Ethan Patterson tied it up with a Power Play goal. With five minutes remaining in the third, Aizyk Laliberte sniped a top corner Power Play goal to take the lead. Roper would then shut the door to secure the 4-3 victory and a first place seed in the playoffs.

In the quarter-finals, Casco Bay beat the Montclair Blues (NJ) 5-2. Caiden Kelley had a hat trick, Blake Christie had four assists, Anthony Graceffa had a goal and an assist and Connor Morrisette had two assists. Aizyk Laliberte had the other goal while Gunner Truman and Matthew Paradis pitched in with assists.

In the semi-finals against the Hamden Dragons (CT), Casco Bay once again found themselves trailing the game as Hamden took a 4-2 into the third period. Casco fought back to win the game 5-4. Ethan Patterson led the way with two goals while Anthony Graceffa had a goal and an assist and Colby Carnes had two assists. Kelley and Oliveira rounded out the scoring.

It was an all E9 final featuring Casco Bay and the NH Avalanche, who advanced to the championship game with a 2-1 win against the St. Louis Sting. Casco Bay jumped out to a 6-1 lead on the strength of three highlight reel goals by Aizyk Laliberte. Carnes and Oliveira also each contributed their own pretty top-corner goals while Morrissette scored a sweet goal with just 4 seconds left in the second period with the help of a nifty play from Laliberte. A tired Casco team then leaned on their star goalie, Adeline Roper, who made big save after big save as the Spartans held on for a 6-4 win.
